What Is Tajweed?

Tajweed is the science of reciting each letter from its correct point with its correct qualities. Here is the beginner's overview.

The word Tajweed comes from a root meaning to improve or make excellent. In practice, it is the set of rules that preserve how the Quran is recited.

The main areas of Tajweed

Most syllabi organise Tajweed into a handful of groups, learned gradually rather than all at once.

  • • Makharij — where each letter is articulated
  • • Sifaat — the qualities of each letter
  • • Noon saakin and tanween rules
  • • Meem saakin rules
  • • Madd — rules of elongation
  • • Qalqalah — the echoing letters
  • • Waqf — stopping and starting correctly

How long does it take?

Learning the rules takes months; applying them fluently takes longer and depends on regular recitation with a teacher who listens carefully.
